The Global Energy Alliance for People and Planet (GEAPP) brings together philanthropy including the IKEA Foundation, The Rockefeller Foundation and the Bezos Earth Fund, governments, technology, policy and development partners, and the private sector to tackle the twin challenges of energy access and transition in emerging and developing countries. By 2030, we aim to expand clean energy access to one billion people, enable 150 million new jobs and reduce 4 gigatons of future carbon emissions. ABOUT THE ROLE
We are seeking a highly skilled Energy Economist with deep expertise in evaluation and economic modeling to support rigorous assessments of energy programs across developing regions. This role will involve working across teams to design and implement evaluations using both primary and secondary data sources, estimating the impact of energy interventions on outcomes such as jobs, livelihoods, and household welfare . The Energy Economist will provide cross-cutting support to regional teams and the solutions delivery team, in coordination with regional MEL experts.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES AND ACCOUNTABILITIES
Design and support impact evaluations and economic modeling of energy systems interventions.
Develop guidelines to utilize primary and secondary data to assess program outcomes, focusing on employment, income, welfare, and productivity impacts.
Collaborate with regional teams and MEL experts to integrate quantitative insights into broader evaluation and learning efforts.
Develop and apply econometric and statistical methods to identify causal impacts of energy access and transition initiatives.
Support synthesis of findings into clear, actionable reports for a range of stakeholders including donors, partners, and program teams.
Engage in cross-regional learning to inform strategy, improve program design, and strengthen evidence-based decision-making.
BEHAVIORAL COMPETENCIES
Minimum of 10 years of experience in applied economics, with a focus on impact evaluation and modeling in the energy or development sector.
Designing and conducting quantitative evaluations
Economic modeling of energy access, energy transitions, and associated development outcomes, including measuring impact on jobs
Use of household surveys, firm-level data, and energy sector databases
Familiarity with secondary data sources related to energy in developing countries is highly desirable.
Proficiency in econometric software (e.g., Stata, R, Python).
Strong collaboration skills and experience working in interdisciplinary teams across geographies.
Excellent analytical writing and communication skills.
Advanced degree (Ph.D. or Master’s) in economics, energy economics, development economics, or a related field.
COMPENSATION & BENEFITS
This is a full-time, exempt position with an annualized starting salary of $160,000-$190,000, commensurate with experience. GEAPP provides a comprehensive benefits package including a robust paid time off plan of 28 days annual leave in addition to org-wide end-of-year-office closure, 401(k) retirement plan with 10% employer contribution, $1,000 annually for work-from-home expenses and $100 monthly for use for transit.
This position will be based in our DC office and report directly to the Chief Impact Officer. GEAPP prides itself on being a flexible employer and employees typically operate on a hybrid schedule that includes 2-3 days in office per week.
