Job Description

Washington, District of Columbia, United States

The Global Energy Alliance for People and Planet (GEAPP) brings together philanthropy including the IKEA Foundation, The Rockefeller Foundation and the Bezos Earth Fund, governments, technology, policy and development partners, and the private sector to tackle the twin challenges of energy access and transition in emerging and developing countries. By 2030, we aim to expand clean energy access to one billion people, enable 150 million new jobs and reduce 4 gigatons of future carbon emissions. We believe clean energy is development: without it, every other form of progress is undermined so we’re building a movement to unlock a new era of inclusive green economic growth that accelerates universal energy access while enabling the global community to meet critical climate goals during the next decade.

About the Role
The Investment Director plays an important strategic role in the Investment Team by:

  • Working closely with program teams to evaluate, execute, and manage investment transactions in line with GEAPP’s investment strategy.
  • Managing portfolio performance, conducting impact assessments, and monitoring risks.
  • Providing expertise and insight into market trends, innovative structures, transactions, and approaches to meet GEAPP’s impact targets.
  • Representing the investment team on a day-to-day basis, offering commercial expertise including insights on market trends, blended finance structures, precedent transactions, and strategies to achieve GEAPP’s impact goals.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

  • Capital Deployment:
  • Collaborate with private investors and GEAPP teams to develop global strategies aligned with regional priorities.
  • Conduct comprehensive due diligence on potential investments, assessing business models, partners, management teams, impact factors, financial sustainability, and risks.
  • Lead investment structuring and negotiate terms and conditions for projects.
  • Present investment opportunities to GEAPP’s management and Investment Committee.
  • Oversee portfolio investees proactively to ensure alignment with impact objectives and compliance with agreed terms.
  • Market Analysis and Relationship Building:
  • Track and analyze market trends, blended finance structures, and transactions to inform capital deployment decisions.
  • Develop and leverage relationships with Alliance partners to support capital mobilization in core markets.

Qualifications and Competencies

  • Experience in development finance with demonstrated investment judgment, strong financial structuring, analytical, and due diligence skills.
  • Extensive knowledge of blended finance instruments and expertise in energy, climate, or infrastructure sectors in developing countries.
  • Proven relationship management skills with key investment players in GEAPP’s sectors and geographies; Spanish or Portuguese language skills or networks in the Latin America and Caribbean (LAC) region are a plus.
  • Strong project management and decision-making abilities to evaluate risks and make investment recommendations.
  • Ability to construct portfolios considering investment rationale, impact, and risk/return profiles.
  • Commitment to social impact investing.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with a collaborative approach and proven ability to work cross-functionally with impact, legal, partnerships, and communications teams.
  • Flexibility and comfort working in uncertain, fast-paced environments.

Education, Experience and Skills

  • Undergraduate or advanced degree in finance, economics, or equivalent experience.
  • 8-15 years of professional investment experience in developing countries, preferably deploying diverse financial instruments such as debt, equity, guarantees, and fund investments.
  • Experience sourcing, structuring, negotiating, and executing blended finance deals in the Global South, especially grid-based renewable energy transactions.
  • Track record of executing innovative, first-of-a-kind energy transactions.
  • Strong analytical, due diligence, and negotiation skills.
  • Entrepreneurial and strategic mindset with the ability to identify issues and propose creative solutions.
  • Ability to multi-task and adapt to changing environments.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Sensitivity to diverse cultures and a team-oriented approach.
  • Spanish or Portuguese language skills are advantageous to support engagement in the LAC region.
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively across teams including impact, legal, partnerships, and communications.
  • Willingness to travel.

Compensation & Benefits
This is a full-time, exempt position with an annualized starting salary of $160,000-$190,000, commensurate with experience. GEAPP provides a comprehensive benefits package including a robust paid time off plan of 28 days annual leave in addition to org-wide end-of-year-office closure, 401(k) retirement plan with 10% employer contribution, $1,000 annually for work-from-home expenses and $100 monthly for use for transit.

This position could be based in our NYC or DC offices. GEAPP prides itself on being a flexible employer and employees typically operate on a hybrid schedule that typically includes 2 days in office per week.

We operate from a strong commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion in everything we do. It is not only the right thing to do – we could not make an impact without our team members' diverse perspectives and experiences. We expect all GEAPP employees to contribute by developing their unique perspectives and talent, challenging conventional wisdom through evidence and reason, and amplifying marginalized voices.

GEAPP LLC is committed to the principles of equal employment opportunity and compliance with all federal, state, and local laws concerning employment discrimination, including the Americans with Disabilities Act. To this end, the organization ensures equal opportunity to all employees and applicants regardless of race, color, age, gender, sexual orientation, religion, marital status, national origin or ancestry, citizenship, lawful alien status, physical, mental, and medical disability, veteran status, or liability for service in the United States Armed Forces.
