What you will be doing:
This position is a primary source of public information and public service in the Fairbanks ADF&G Public Information Center, providing customers with information about the area, explaining hunting and trapping regulations, issuing permits and harvest tickets, selling licenses and tags, and collecting and recording harvest reports. The incumbent seals animals such as bears, furs, and sheep on a regular basis, maintains vehicles and equipment, and classifies, analyses, and summarizes harvest data. Fieldwork includes responding to nuisance wildlife situations, acting as observer during aerial wildlife surveys, and occasional wildlife capture work.

This position will serve as a permanent seasonal, full-time technician with the Division of Wildlife Conservation in Fairbanks and will be responsible for working as part of a team in the Regional Wildlife Information Center in Fairbanks. The Information Center assists people from around the world, answering questions about hunting and trapping regulations, hunting opportunities, hunter education, and wildlife viewing in the region and statewide. This position provides customer service to the public and assists with providing field and logistical support to research and management biologists throughout Interior and Northeast Alaska. This is currently a 11-month seasonal position. If additional funding is available the position may be extended beyond 11 months, otherwise the selected applicant will be on seasonal leave without pay. The position is overtime eligible.

Our organization, mission and culture:
Wildlife Conservations mission is to conserve and enhance Alaska's wildlife and habitats and provide for a wide range of public uses and benefits. This position is defined by our core services that maintain and enhance opportunities to hunt, trap, and view wildlife because it helps to provide people an opportunity to gain knowledge and appreciation for Alaska's wildlife, its management, and ways to interact with wildlife safely and ethically.
The Alaska Department of Fish & Game strives for a diverse and inclusive workforce where safety and wellbeing are paramount and employees at all levels promote a culture where everyone is valued, treated equitably, and treated respectfully.

The benefits of joining our team:
This position offers a great opportunity to work for ADF&G and to gain skills needed to work in the field of wildlife biology and management.

The working environment you can expect:
The position is located at the ADF&G office at 1300 College Road in Fairbanks. The daily work environment involves effective communication and teamwork with office coworkers as well as regular use of a computer while assisting the public in person and over the phone at the information desk or in the laboratory at the Fairbanks office. Fieldwork is required throughout the season and may involve exposure to animals, biting insects, inclement weather, firearms, low-level aircraft flight, and/or travel by boat or skiff. Aerial surveys are conducted in small aircraft maneuvering at low altitude for long periods of time in sometimes cold conditions.
This position may require field work which can involve exposure to large animals, insects, inclement weather, low level flying in planes and helicopters, travel by boat or skiff, and contact with drugs and chemicals used to immobilize wildlife.

Who we are looking for:

  • Knowledge of the plants, animals, fish, and habitats found in Alaska and ability to have discussions about these with hunters, trappers, fishers, and wildlife viewers including assisting the public with human/wildlife interactions and intervening when necessary.
  • Experience handling large amounts of money, maintaining accurate records, recording and entering data accurately, and following instructions and protocols. Also have experience using computer programs for data entry, analysis, and archiving.
  • Working with dead, sometimes stinky animal carcasses or animal parts, or handling live animals from big game like moose to squirrels or birds including trapping, hazing, and euthanizing when necessary while ensuring the safety of yourself, your team, and the animals involved.
