Maintenance Mechanic

Grand Rapids, MI

12-nights (2-2-3 schedule), 6pm-6:30am

Position Overview
The Maintenance Mechanic reports to the Maintenance Manager and is responsible for performing mechanical and electrical maintenance on equipment and facility systems to ensure optimal operation and minimal downtime. This role also includes shared responsibility for annual building and equipment maintenance.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Follow all work instructions, safety rules, and PPE requirements, reinforcing compliance with peers
  • \n
  • Maintain general housekeeping of the plant and assigned maintenance areas
  • \n
  • Ensure safety procedures, including startup/shutdown and lockout/tagout, are strictly followed
  • \n
  • Operate forklifts, highboys, scissor lifts, and other lifts (training required)
  • \n
  • Apply OSHA safety knowledge relevant to daily operations
  • \n
  • Research and recommend standardized equipment to reduce spare parts and vendor variety
  • \n
  • Manage preventive maintenance scheduling through CMMS to minimize downtime
  • \n
  • Maintain accurate documentation of repairs, purchases, and maintenance activities
  • \n
  • Diagnose plant system failures and recommend cost-effective solutions
  • \n
  • Perform maintenance on electrical, mechanical, HVAC, plumbing, boilers, chillers, process equipment, generators, and general facility systems with minimal supervision
  • \n
  • Train maintenance mechanics and helpers on best practices
  • \n
  • Troubleshoot issues and consult with the Facility Engineer for alternative solutions
  • \n
  • Clean, lubricate, and adjust mechanical components as needed
  • \n
  • Install new equipment within the scope of knowledge and ability
  • \n
  • Work under the guidance of senior mechanics or the Facility Engineer as needed
  • \n
  • Exhibit strong problem-solving, communication, and teamwork skills
  • \n
  • Utilize plant radios and intercoms professionally and effectively
  • \n
  • Prioritize customer needs and remain flexible with shifting priorities
  • \n
  • Manage external contractors
  • \n

Minimum Requirements
    \n
  • High school diploma or GED
  • \n
  • Strong math, reading, communication, and organizational skills.
  • \n
  • 3- 5+ years of technical training and experience
  • \n
  • Proficiency with computer applications
  • \n
  • Knowledge of trade fundamentals for general repairs
  • \n
  • Experience with mechanical systems (pumps, mixers, machinery repair), electrical components, and HVAC equipment
  • \n
  • Experience operating and maintaining boilers, chillers, compressors, and process controls
  • \n
  • Ability to troubleshoot and repair complex pneumatic control systems, electrical schematics, and process piping systems
  • \n
  • Knowledge of medium voltage 3-phase electrical systems and low voltage control circuits
  • \n
  • Strong troubleshooting skills across multiple disciplines
  • \n
  • Ability to participate in an on-call rotation
  • \n

  • Familiarity with CMMS, preventive, and predictive maintenance

  • Certified to work on refrigeration equipment
  • \n
  • Pipefitting, machining, metal fabrication, and electrical skills
  • \n
  • PLC programming and troubleshooting experience

Physical Requirements
    \n
  • Regularly required to stand, walk, climb stairs, stretch, and stoop
  • \n
  • Frequently required to lift and move up to 50 lbs. alone and over 100 lbs. with assistance
  • \n
  • Must be able to safely work at elevated heights, including on ladders and roofs
  • \n
  • Ability to operate forklifts, electric pallet jacks, and other heavy equipment
  • \n
  • Work environment may involve exposure to industrial machinery, requiring adherence to safety protocols
  • \n
  • Heavy wrench turning and the use of proper PPE for chemicals used at the facility
  • \n

Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to education, work experience, certifications, and geographic location.

The salary for this role is $29/hr.
